The name “Scandal Point” is said to have originated from a scandal that occurred there in the early 20th century involving a Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala at that time and a British woman who was viceroy’s daughter. According to legend, the Maharaja of Patiala, who was a regular visitor to Shimla during the British Raj, fell in love with a British woman. However, their relationship was not accepted by the British society, and the couple was forced to part ways. The place where they used to meet became known as Scandal Point.


The king was later on banned from entering Shimla. The series of events lead to the king establishing a new capital for himself in Chail, which is around 45 km from Shimla.

To be more precise, the intersection between the Ridge and Mall Road from where the elopement incident happened was named Scandal Point.

The Scandal Point is also famous for its statue of Indira Gandhi, who was the Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977 and from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. The statue was installed in 1984 as a tribute to her memory.
